Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Understanding Functions. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

The Input and Output relationship in a function table can be expressed as a graph on a co-ordinate plane where (input, output) is equivalent to (x, y) where the input is the x value and the corresponding output is the y value.
Numbers in a function table prior to rule being applied are called the Inputs.
Determine whether coordinate pairs plotted on a graph show a function based upon number of outputs for each input.
The operation/s that are applied to the input are called the Rule.
A Function is a Rule applied to inputs that yield exactly one output.
Numbers in a function table after the Rule is applied are called the Outputs.
There is exactly one output for every input.
A coordinate pair is an exact location on a Cartesian Grid.
A coordinate pair is expressed as an (x, y) coordinate in which the x value determines the location of a point along the x – axis or horizontal axis and the y value as the location of the point along the y – axis or vertical axis of a Cartesian Grid.
Determine whether a table is a function based upon the number of outputs for an input.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

When looking at a coordinate pair, what do the numbers mean? What are coordinates used for in everyday life? Explain where the x and y lines are located on a graph?

After the Game

Explain how you knew how to plot the coordinate plots in the game? How were you able to tell if the game showed you a function or not? Explain how you solved problems in the equation x=2y-4 when given a number for x? What is the difference between a relationship that is a function and a relationship that is not a function?
