Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Algebraic Expressions using Distributive Property. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Solve equations where the same variable is on both sides of the equation (d = 3d + 16)
Solve equations where the same variable is on both sides of the equation by manipulating the equation to combine the like terms of the same variable ( d = 3d +16 to d – 3d = 3d – 3d + 16 to -2d = 16 to 2d/2 = 16/2 to d = 8).
Add and subtract the coefficients when combining like terms.
Like terms on one side of the equation should be combined before manipulating the equation to move terms to the opposite side of the = ( 3d – 9d + 84 = 12d to -6d + 84 = 12d to -6d – (-6d) +84 = 12d – (-6d) to 84 = 18d to 4 2/3 = d).
Use distributive property in order to combine like terms or expand the get like terms ( 3x (5 + y) – 10x = 12 to 15x + 3xy -10x = 12 to 5x + 3xy = 12 where the -10x and 15x were combined).
Solve equations with rational number coefficients that do not require expanding.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is an equation? How do I know which steps to complete first when solving equations? Describe your first step in solving the equation 4x+7=19.

After the Game

How did you proceed to solve an equation including the distributive property? What is your first step in an equation that has variables on both sides? Will we always get integer answers when solving equations?
