Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Use Number Lines to Rationalize Inequalities. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

In general the value of numbers increase as they go right on the number line and decrease as they go left.
Numbers can be compared for value by their relative position.
Negative numbers larger in magnitude are of lesser value and therefore further left of 0 on a number line.
Interpret statements of inequality about the relative position of two numbers on a number line.
When ordering negative numbers, the closer to 0 a number is, the greater it’s value.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

On a number line, where do we find the negative values compared to the zero? If a number lies to the right of another number, is it greater than or less than that number? When is it necessary to use the open circle when graphing a line? What are some values that are less than negative 3? What are some values that are greater than or equal to 7? If something you want to buy is less than $10, what are some possible costs for the item?

After the Game

How do words like "at least" or "up to" change your graph of a line? How did you show that the number at the beginning of your line was also included in the solutions? Which direction on the number line gives lesser values? Which direction on the number line gives greater values? How did you know when to use an open circle or closed circle when plotting the values on the number line?
