Instructions
Play through this interactive game to learn about Graph Points In Quadrant 1 To Represent Problems. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.
Main Concepts
When locating a point on the graph, you would first move from the origin horizontally as marked by the x value and then move vertically from that point as denoted by the y value.
The y value determines the vertical movement away from the origin with positive values denoting movement up from the origin and negative x values denoting movement down from the origin.
The x value determines the horizontal movement away from the origin with positive values denoting movement to the right of the origin and negative x values denoting movement to the left of the origin.
The first number in an ordered pair is labeled the x coordinate and the second the y coordinate and is expressed as (x, y).
The coordinate plane is 2 perpendicular lines that serve as the starting point for describing precise location. The horizontal line is labeled the x-axis and the vertical line is labeled the y-axis.
A coordinate pair with a 0 would mean no movement off of that axis.
Solve mathematical and real-world problems using coordinates in the first quadrant.
Quadrant 1 is defined as both x and y coordinates are positive values.
Interpret the components of a rectangular grid structure as line segments or lines.
Location is precisely described using the intersection of those lines and line segments.
Where the x-axis and y-axis meet is called the origin and it represents 0 for both axis.
Discussion Questions
Before the Game
On a coordinate plane, which is the x-coordinate and which is the y-coordinate? In ordered pairs, which value is the first number?
After the Game
What are some real world applications for using coordinate grids? When given a set of latitude and longitude coordinates, which one is always first in the ordered pair?
