Play through this interactive game to learn about Base 10 Patterns. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

In the base 10 system, the value of each place is 10 times the value of the place to the immediate right.
In the base 10 system, the value of each place is 1/10 the value of the place to the immediate left.
Multiplying by 10 moves the multiplicand one place to theright. If it is a single digit number then the imagined 0’s are placed in the ones place.
Dividing by 10 moves the multiplicand one place to the left.
Understand why multiplying by a power of 10 shifts the digits of a whole number or decimal that many places to the right.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

Explain the difference between the ones and tens place values. Do both digits in 48 have the same value? When multiplying a number with a decimal by a power of 10, how do you know how many places to move the decimal? When dividing a number with a decimal by a power of 10, how do you know how many places to move the decimal?

After the Game

How did you know when to move the digits to the left or right in the game? What did you learn a rule is for multiplying vs. dividing a number? What happened when you started using exponents to multiply or divide by? How was the exponent number a clue for how to move the digits?
