Description

You'll be helping Pippo build his barnyard! Knowledge of perimeter and area is very important to manage this barnyard. You'll be dealing with the plants and animals and the items they need to be satisfied. The more happier they are, the more successful the barnyard!

Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Application of Area and Perimeter Formulas. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Solve mathematical and real-world problems involving the perimeter and area of rectangles with whole-number side lengths using a visual model.
For Rectangles Area = length x width. The formula is a generalization of the understanding, that, given a unit of length, a rectangle whose sides have length w units and l units, can be partitioned into w rows of unit squares with l squares in each row. The product l w gives the number of unit squares in the partition, thus the area measurement is l w square units. These square units are derived from the length unit.
Calculations for the perimeter of a rectangle use the properties of operations, e.g., 2l + 2w = 2 (l +w) shows the distributive property.
Area problems will give one dimension or just the area and asked to find sides and apply found measurements. (Unknown Factor Problems).
Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is the formula for finding the area of a rectangle? If you are given an area of 8, what might the length and width of the rectangle be? Where is the perimeter of a rectangle? What is the formula for finding perimeter of a rectangle?

After the Game

How did you use your knowledge of perimeter to decide how much fence you needed to build? What are other real life situations that may require a knowledge of area and perimeter? What strategies did you use to maximize the amount your farm was worth? What would you do differently next time to earn the maximum amount of money each time you sold your farm? What is the process when finding the area of multiple rectangles?
