Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Real World Fraction Problems. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Once equivalent fractions are made of the addends or the minuend and subtrahend only the numerators are being added or subtracted. The denominators remain the same for the sum or difference of the fractions.
In order to add or subtract fractions the denominators (or size of the parts of a whole) need to be the same size.
Solve word problems involving addition or subtraction of fractions without a model.
Solve word problems involving addition or subtraction of fractions using a model.
Finding the equivalent fractions with common denominators does not change the value of either fraction.
In order to add or subtract fractions with unlike denominators you must find equivalent fractions with the same denominator.
To find equivalent fractions you must multiply by a fraction that is equal to one whole (any fraction with the same numerator and denominator is = to 1, ex 2/2 =1, 19/19 = 1)
In order to add or subtract fractions both fractions will need to be changed to have common denominators (Different from 4th grade where only 1 fraction has to be changed).
To find the sum or difference of fractions with unlike denominators finding the Least Common Denominator (LCD) is not necessary. Students may use the method of multiplying the numerator and denominator by the unlike fraction’s denominator. (a/b + c/d = a/b x d/d + c/d x b/b = (ad+bc)/bd) This is the preferred method at this point.
Fractions can be proper, improper (greater than one whole) or mixed numbers for addition or subtraction.
Understanding that the size of units change by creating equivalent fractions.
