Description

My Little Ecosystem: Bloom & Balance is a top-down, real-time ecosystem simulator where players control a character moving freely across a vibrant pixel-art world. As players progress, they unlock new tools and mechanics that add depth and strategy to the experience. In the game, you’ll plant flowers, release butterflies to pollinate blooms, place frogs to manage insect populations, grow trees, and encourage fungi to recycle nutrients, all working together to restore and maintain balance in a dynamic, living ecosystem. Your challenge is to carefully manage these interdependent species and environmental factors to keep the ecosystem thriving, making strategic choices as the complexity grows.

Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Competition for Resources In Ecosystems. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

An increase or decrease in the population of a species in an ecosystem will likely affect all other organisms in the ecosystem.
Reproduction is a life function of an organism.
Obtaining and processing nutrients for growth is a life function of an organism.
Competition for resources can occur among organisms of the same species or among different populations within a community.
Because resources in an ecosystem are limited, living organisms compete for resources.
Apparent competition occurs when a change in the population of a prey species affects another prey species.
Access to nutrient-rich soil affects the growth of a plant.
Living things in an ecosystem require food, shelter, water, space, nutrient-rich soil, and other resources for survival.
Exploitative competition occurs when an organism or population uses a resource so that another organism or population cannot.
Direct competition occurs when organisms interact directly to secure a resource.
An ecosystem consists of a group of living things and the environment in which they live.
Availability of resources in an ecosystem can be affected by invasive species, disease, climate, natural hazards, and human activities.

Discussion Questions

What are the components that make up an ecosystem? What are three resources that a plant needs to grow?

After the Game

How did competition among organisms in your ecosystem affect the balance of your ecosystem? Which organisms shared a relationship that can be described as mutualism? What two things are needed for an organism to reproduce? What roles do water, sunlight and wind play in the success of the ecosystem?
