Description

Embark on a journey through all of Earth's systems with Astro Rabbit and his robot companion RoboZe. They are travellers from other parts of space, and together they will discover the beauty and complexity of all the systems that compose Earth. Lead them from the atmosphere all the way to the geosphere in five different settings and learn with them.

Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Earth Materials and Systems. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Earth’s mantle is hot, soft, solid rock.
Earth’s inner core is hot and mostly metallic.
Water that falls from clouds is called precipitation.
The Sun provides light and heat energy that cause the water cycle to flow on Earth.
The landforms in a region affect the types of living things that can exist there.
Weather and climate affect the types of living things found in a region.
Water waves from the ocean shape coastal landforms.
In the water cycle, heat energy from the Sun causes water in the ocean to increase in temperature and evaporate into a gas.
Weather conditions, such as rainfall, can shape the landforms on Earth through weathering and erosion.
The biosphere includes all of the living organisms on Earth.
Water can flow between the ground, air, and organisms on Earth in many different pathways through the water cycle.
In the water cycle, water vapor in the atmosphere cools and condenses to form clouds.
The hydrosphere includes Earth’s water in liquid, ice, and gas form, including the water in the atmosphere, oceans, rivers, lakes, glaciers, soils, and groundwater.
The atmosphere includes all of the gases surrounding the Earth.
The ocean supports a variety of ecosystems and organisms.
The water cycle is the continuous movement of water throughout Earth’s geosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere.
The ocean heats and cools more slowly than land, and this produces more temperate climates in coastal areas.
The geosphere includes Earth’s crust, mantle, outer and inner cores.
Winds and clouds in the atmosphere interact with mountain ranges to determine patterns of weather.
Surface runoff is water that moves downhill across Earth’s surface towards the ocean due to the force of gravity.
Some natural processes occur suddenly while others occur gradually over time.
Different landforms on Earth include mountains, hills, valleys, canyons, deltas, sand dunes, and plains.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What are two gases that are part of our atmosphere? What do we call gases that are in our atmosphere that are not healthy?

After the Game

What are the basic steps in the water cycle? What happens when the ground does not get enough precipitation? Which parts of the Earth are included in the biosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere? What examples in the game helped you understand that different parts of the Earth support different living and non-living things?
