Description

In this game you will learn more about the many features of the deepest parts of the world: the seafloor. Help Jacques navigate his sub in the deep seas. Use his sub to take important pictures of the seafloor, but you will need to be careful. You will have to look out for sea mines and look for energy to increase your area of visibility. Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Seafloor Spreading and Subduction. Suitable for Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6.

Main Concepts

The ocean crust consists of basaltic (volcanic) rock, overlaid by sediments.
Subduction occurs at a deep sea trench where two tectonic plates converge, forcing oceanic rock to sink into Earth's mantle.
Seafloor spreading involves the formation of new ocean rock at a mid-ocean ridge that pushes older ocean rock away towards deep sea trenches, where it is destroyed.
A mid-ocean ridge is a divergent plate boundary where new ocean crust forms through volcanic eruptions.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is subduction in tectonic plates? How does it affect the seafloor? Are the plains or trenches the thickest part of the seafloor? Why?

After the Game

How does tectonic movement affect the seafloor? How is an ocean trench different from an ocean ridge?
