Description

Learn how rigid motions (translations, rotations and reflections) work, applied to real world shapes and images! It's like you are solving a puzzle, determining the correct actions to be performed in order to get the correct final image, perfectly overlapping the given target.

reflections

Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Properties of Rigid Transformations. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Reflections, rotations, and translations, and compositions of these, are called rigid motions.
Two figures are considered the same if one can be superimposed on the other.
Experiment with translations (sliding a figure in a particular direction for a particular distance), rotations (rotates around a particular point called the center of rotation) and reflections (flipping a point or figure over a particular line called the line of reflection).
Use transparencies to experiment with rigid motions.
Rigid Motions preserve the lengths of line segments.
Terminology for transformations, image, pre-image, and preserve are used to describe the effects of rigid motions and other transformations.
Use all transformations in experimentation with lines and line segments of the same length to see that they do not change in length.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What are rigid motions of shapes What are translations of shapes? What is a rotation of a shape? What is a reflection of a shape?

After the Game

To get a shape in the right position what did you have to do with the motions? In the game, which rigid motion did you find the easiest to use and why? In the game, which rigid motion did you find hardest to use and why? In the game, which motion allowed you to move your shape into a new box on the screen? Why were the other two motions unable to do this?
