Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Rotate, Reflect And Translate Parallel Lines. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Experiment with translations (sliding a figure in a particular direction for a particular distance), rotations (rotates around a particular point called the center of rotation) and reflections (flipping a point or figure over a particular line called the line of reflection).
Two figures are considered the same if one can be superimposed on the other.
Reflections, rotations, and translations, and compositions of these, are called rigid motions.
Terminology for transformations, image, pre-image, and preserve are used to describe the effects of rigid motions and other transformations.
Use all transformations in experimentation with parallel lines to see that their distance relative to one another does not change when performing any transformations.
Verify experimentally parallel lines are mapped to parallel lines.
Verify experimentally the relationship that exists after a rigid motion or rigid motions occur with parallel lines.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is a translation? What does it mean when we say that a shape that has been translocated is also preserved? How does the coordinate plane relate to translations? What is a rune? What is the difference between a preimage and an image?

After the Game

Why are rotation and reflection still considered types of rigid motion? What are the differences and similarities between rotation and reflection? How can you tell if a figure has been translated correctly? What is the difference between transversal and parallel lines?
