Instructions
Play through this interactive game to learn about Transmission and Refraction of Light. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.
Main Concepts
The higher the refractive index of a material, the more light slows down (and bends) when it transmits through it.
The refractive index of a material is the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in the material.
All electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed through a vacuum: the speed of light.
The refractive index of a material is proportional to its density.
Light travels outwards in straight lines from its source.
Electromagnetic waves travel at different speeds as they transmit through different types of matter.
Dispersive materials (such as a prism) cause different wavelengths of light to travel at different speeds, causing light to refract into a rainbow.
Visible light includes all of the colors of the rainbow.
When light transmits from one medium to another, it changes speed, causing it to change direction (refract).
Light is the transfer of energy via electromagnetic waves.
Discussion Questions
Before the Game
What is light? What are lenses? What do lenses do to light? What is the electromagnetic spectrum?
After the Game
What are the three tools available to you in this game? How did the various lenses effect light? What is the difference in appearance between a concave lens and a convex lens?
