Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Unlike Denominators. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Finding the equivalent fractions with common denominators does not change the value of either fraction.
In order to add or subtract fractions the denominators (or size of the parts of a whole) need to be the same size.
Fractions can be proper, improper (greater than one whole) or mixed numbers for addition or subtraction.
Understanding that the size of units change by creating equivalent fractions.
Use visual fraction models, number lines, or equations to demonstrate thinking and solving of fractional addition and subtraction.
Add fractions with unlike denominators
Add mixed numbers with unlike denominators
Subtract fractions with unlike denominators
Subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators
In order to add or subtract fractions with unlike denominators you must find equivalent fractions with the same denominator.
To find equivalent fractions you must multiply by a fraction that is equal to one whole (any fraction with the same numerator and denominator is = to 1, ex 2/2 =1, 19/19 = 1)
Once equivalent fractions are made of the addends or the minuend and subtrahend only the numerators are being added or subtracted. The denominators remain the same for the sum or difference of the fractions.
In order to add or subtract fractions both fractions will need to be changed to have common denominators (Different from 4th grade where only 1 fraction has to be changed).
To find the sum or difference of fractions with unlike denominators finding the Least Common Denominator (LCD) is not necessary. Students may use the method of multiplying the numerator and denominator by the unlike fraction’s denominator. (a/b + c/d = a/b x d/d + c/d x b/b = (ad+bc)/bd) This is the preferred method at this point.
Finding the LCD then multiplying by the appropriate factor is acceptable but not necessary.
Simplifying the sum or difference to be in lowest terms is not necessary.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

In this game you will add and subtract fractions - explain what a fraction is? Explain how you would use fractions in your everyday life? When playing this game you will have choose fractions that can have a common denominator, how do you figure out if the fractions have a common denominator? What steps do you take to add or subtract fractions with uncommon denominators?

After the Game

When playing this game, you might have noticed there were several options for answers with each fraction - did the amount of the fractions change even though the numbers changed? When playing this game how did you decide what the denominator should be? In this game you had to find common denominators - how were you able to do that when you were given three different denominator numbers? How did you have to manipulate the numerator as you changed the denominators?
