Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Scientific Method. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

When scientists plan an investigation, they must decide on a specific procedure to follow.
The scientific method is a process that scientists follow in order to learn about the world around us.
The scientific method allows other scientists to repeat an experiment and confirm the results.
When conducting an experiment it is important to ask a testable question.
A testable question is one that can be answered by making observations.
Sometimes scientists make a hypothesis before conducting an experiment or investigation.
A hypothesis is a guess about the answer to a scientific question.
A step in the scientific process is planning and carrying out an investigation.
When scientists plan an investigation, they must decide on the materials they will use.
Many experiments have multiple trials.
A trial is a single test of the variables that occurs during an experiment.
During an investigation, data are observed and recorded.
Scientists must determine the the correct tools for collecting data.
Analyzing data from an experiment is a part of the scientific process.
Data can be analyzed to determine relationships between variables.
Drawing conclusions is a process scientists go through when conducting experiments or doing investigations.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What type of matter is ice, and can you explain how it can change? What is a way that you can melt ice? How could you figure out if a basketball or baseball will roll faster? What substance do you believe would melt ice the fastest; sand, salt, or sugar? What do you know about the scientific method?

After the Game

What was the hypothesis in the game? Why were snow cones a good object to use in the experiment? What does it mean to analyze data? What was the conclusion of the experiment, and did you think that this would be true? What observations did you make when you were throwing balloons at the Ice Giants that lead you to your hypothesis? Why is it a good idea to list the necessary materials needed to conduct an experiment before beginning? What other experiments could you devise to test the hypothesis of which material can melt ice the fastest?
