Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Understand Fractions As Part Of A Whole. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Must specify the Whole when asking for a numerical interpretation of a model. A model split into 2 equal parts with a shaded portion can be misinterpreted if the whole is not specified.
Denominator denotes the size of the parts when a Whole is split into equal parts, found under the fraction bar in a fraction.
Numerator denotes the number of parts of the whole that are indicated, found on top of the fraction bar in a fraction.
Starts with unit fractions or fractions with a numerator of 1, which are formed by partitioning a whole into equal parts and taking one part. e.g. If a whole is partitioned into 3 equal parts then each part is 1/3.
Move from understanding of “equal parts” to “parts with equal measurements”.
Unit fractions are to be understood to be the basic building block of all fractions.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What does it mean for things to be equal? Can you name something you have heard before that uses the words half, third, or fourth? When you cut a pizza into slices how would you describe one of those pieces?

After the Game

In this game you had to work with numerators and denominators - what is a numerator? What is a denominator? Think about the situations we talked about before the game when you were identifying things you had encountered that use the words half, third, or fourth - after playing the game can you describe what that half, third, or fourth mean in that situation?
